Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive, family-centered nursing care to mothers and babies during antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. This employee assists physicians during examinations and procedures and is expected to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting the physician, nurse practitioner and medical students with exams
  • Using screening procedures, including medical history review and interviewing, in preparing patients for exams
  • Performing specific lab tests, including but not limited to: HGB, UA, blood sugar, blood pressure, pregnancy test, blood draws, etc.
  • Providing contraceptive and HIV counseling
  • Consulting and coordinating with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans: making proper in-house referrals as directed; accepting referrals from local physicians, obtaining adequate history to ensure appropriateness of referral
  • Scheduling surgeries, work-up times and notifying insurance carriers as needed
  • Triaging phone calls for physician from OB/GYN
  • Participating in community education programs
  • Promoting patient advocacy
  • Attending all staff in service sessions
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Associate Degree
  • Completion of accredited program of professional nursing
  • Certified as registered nurse in Iowa
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in the field of obstetrics and gynecology desired
  • Related work experience in health education and counseling desired
  • Working knowledge of common health concerns of pregnant and postpartum women, community resources and the provision of obstetrical and gynecological care
  • Experience with referring and linking women to other providers and social services
  • Experience with electronic medical records
  • Ability to provide high quality,  non-judgmental, patient-centered care to all persons regardless of race, sex, gender, nationality, disability status, sexual orientation, skin color, religion, etc.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to federal and state healthcare regulations and preventative measures (HIPAA confidentiality, infection spread, etc.)

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The employee is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms intermittently throughout the day. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to some hazards such as blood borne pathogens, communicable diseases, body fluids common to clinical situations, cleaning chemicals and medicinal preparation. The employee may be exposed to occasional stress in dealing with multiple projects and difficult patients.
